TEACHING BY THE ARTISTS

The artists invited to show/perform in the William Stok Art Centre, will be asked to teach the public that will attend about the theory and skill that are the basis of their inspiration. A policy that gives the spectators a non passive role in experiencing the arts, because they will be taught by the same artist that has produced /performed the event.

As the Constitution says the Trustees will invite artists that are involved in the visual arts(painting, sculpture, photography, illustration/music/drama/film-making) in the gallery space of the William Stok Art Centre.

Selection by the Trustees or invited critics will take into consideration all types of art styles and disciplines, ethnicity and age group.

To give the public an education in contemporary art (covering the last 50 years and a 360% view of styles), there will be a rolling programme of different aspects of visual art with varied and wide ranging styles

One often discusses the quality of films or a theatrical performance or a concert with friends without knowing anything about the technical process that is involved. It would be an excellent experience to have had the artist discuss and demonstrate this process with the public.

The artist/teacher will be an inspiration or mentor to the public that will attend the courses after they have enjoyed their exhibition/performance

The William Stok Art Centre will provide a space to each artist on a one off basis for the maximum of a month (preferably less depending on circumstances)  and assist them with the delivery to the public of tuition, lectures, workshops and outreach and in their tuition.

TEACHING COSTS

Charges for teaching  by the invited artists who are showing/performing their work will be £5per hour (a lower fee than other educational organisations) with reductions of 50% for unwaged and low income.

LECTURES STRUCTURE

In the premises the artists will be invited to give a lecture.  It will be designed by the artists that will be invited to show/perform in the William Stok Art Centre. This is the correct thing to do because the artist him/herself will have the knowledge of his/her profession and it seems right that the William Stok Art Centre should not interfere in this particular matter unless it is offensive to the public.

After the introduction of the artist the lecture will be of an hour’s duration, followed by open questions/group discussion by the public.

TEACHING STRUCTURE

The tuition/ workshop will follow this framework

1) Introduction by the artist of topic and skills that will be developed during the sessions and what will be accomplished at the end of the course.

2)The purpose of the task and what is expected from the students will be outlined to them.

3)Each lesson will have a 15 minutes lecture on the learning objective related to gaining knowledge.

4)This will be the key information for an interactive exercise that can be shared with the other participants during the ice breaking activity that will happen half way through the lesson, so the student can share his experience with others during open questions and suggestions.

5)Small group discussion, skill building activities.

Generating ideas.

Focus on which ideas the artist/teacher wants to gather.

Wrap up and review key points.

Reinforcement of the main learning points. Give references on further studies.

Bullet point 3 things the students need to know so they can be sure they have reached the learning outcomes
