The William  Stok Art Centre is a charitable organisation to promote the visual arts, (painting/sculpture/photography/illustration/music), theatre and cinema,  that will select artists specialized in those disciplines to show/perform in exchange for tuition in our premises.

The aim of our organisation is to give an opportunity for the general public to be involved creatively with the same artist/teacher of the discipline (show/performance ) that they previously have experienced and this will arouse the curiosity of the public. So the event that the public have engaged in will encourage them to know more about it and to enrol in the lessons that the artists will give.

The invited artists are expected to deliver lectures, teaching and workshops to the public where they will lay down an explanation not only of the concept behind his/her work, but also the techniques he or she has used to be able to fulfil the work/performance.

This tuition will be related to the place the artist holds in history (influences, artists of the same period/ legacy) and the skills, processes, materials, tools used to fulfil the work/performance, a knowledge of which is necessary for a student to express his creativity.

          SELECTION ARTISTS

The disciplines that will be selected for the William Stok Art Centre will be visual Arts (painting, sculpture, photography, illustration), music, theatre, cinema.

No discrimination in the selection on diversity in style or by demographic, ethnicity, background, topic will take place in the William Stok Art Centre.

Artists will be selected for the quality of their work.

PERIOD OF SHOW  /   PERFORMANCE  /   TEACHING

The William Stok Art Centre will provide a space to each artist on a one off basis for the maximum of a month (preferably less depending on circumstances)  and assist them with the delivery to the public of tuition, lectures, workshops and outreach and in their tuition.

The selection of several artists to be invited, based on a season of plays or films or music or visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography, illustration), in dialogue with one another based on themes, burning questions would be considered.

Art work should be appropriate in scale and material to the space given by the William Stok Art Centre. For example: the William Stok Art Centre can’t invite a theatrical group with 100 actors if the given space is not appropriate or a performance doesn’t meet safety standards (fire, electrical risks etc. etc.).

The policy of the William Stok Art Centre is to expand the knowledge and develop insight and appreciation of the arts in the public with the help of invited artists who will be given the possibility to show/perform in the Centre in exchange for giving workshops and tuition to the public for the duration of their event. Workshops in which the artist will explain not only the concept behind his/her work but also the techniques used to be able to fulfil the work/ performance.

For example, a member of the public attending a film made by an invited artist will not remain passive but will learn directly from him/her how to use a camera or edit or draw a storyboard and what type of lens to use for a specific purpose.

This type of relationship between the public’s experience of the artist’s work and the tuition that he will receive from the same artist/teacher will be for all disciplines identified in the Constitution as: visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography, illustration), music, cinema, theatre. For the public who cannot attend the lessons their will be a website and the William Stok Art Centre Facebook page will upload videos, photographs and lectures to inform and educate.

 SELECTION VISUAL ARTISTS

(PAINTING / SCULPTURE / PHOTOGRAPHY / ILLUSTRATION)

An item will be selected for its quality. The selection process will prefer artists who have produced work with an original approach and emotional, inspirational and intellectual impact

For visual art the work must not be a mass-produced piece or a reproduction.   The selection will look at how is the medium, composition, colour, elements, material treated in the art work. Also how is the inspiration, the subject matter developed in the finished work

SELECTION PERFORMANCE ARTISTS

The selection process will prefer artists with an original approach and emotional, inspirational and intellectual impact. Theatre or film with a new script or new musical score will be preferable. Bold statements that reach the public with their act and widely relatable interest, argument and ideas that can change the perception of the public will be considered.  Small casts to create an inviting feeling or the selection of plays that are in the public domain or a new play will be encouraged.

LECTURES STRUCTURE

In the premises the artists will be invited to give a lecture.  It will be designed by the artists that will be invited to show/perform in the William Stok Art Centre. This is the correct thing to do because the artist him/herself will have the knowledge of his/her profession and it seems right that the William Stok Art Centre should not interfere in this particular matter unless it is offensive to the public.

TEACHING STRUCTURE

The tuition/ workshop will follow this framework

1) Introduction by the artist of topic and skills that will be developed during the sessions and what will be accomplished at the end of the course.

2)The purpose of the task and what is expected from the students will be outlined to them.

3)Each lesson will have a 15 minutes lecture on the learning objective related to gaining knowledge.

4)This will be the key information for an interactive exercise that can be shared with the other participants during the ice breaking activity that will happen half way through the lesson, so the student can share his experience with others during open questions and suggestions.

5)Small group discussion, skill building activities.

Generating ideas.

Focus on which ideas the artist/teacher wants to gather.

Wrap up and review key points.

Reinforcement of the main learning points. Give references on further studies.

Bullet point 3 things the students need to know so they can be sure they have reached the learning outcomes.
